I had the most fabulous day yesterday. Firstly we met Star Trek Girl in one of Brighton's best tea rooms with some other friends - she is off to Oman for 2-4 years on Tuesday so it was kind of goodbye for some of them. We're taking her to the airport so will see her before she goes so it wasn't so bad for me.
Then we went to some free 'improv comedy thing' for the festival - this was a bit hit and miss and sometimes they imparted improv hilarity and other times it was a bit cringy. It was really nice to get out and do something though as the festival often comes and goes without me seeing any of it. I had been slightly hesitant about the company as well but it turned out fine.
Then (the highlight of the day for me) we went over to one of BBF's friends to watch The Eurovision Song Contest. I'm not a huge fan of Eurovision but it's so deliciously naff that it's really fun to watch in a mocking group. The entries are sometimes really surprising and the rest of Europe famously marked us at nil pwa for years as punishment for invading Iraq.
The best Eurovision gathering I ever went to was some years ago where you we score cards to mark down singers for certain infringements. So pointing at the audience whilst winking, leather trousers, maintaining eye contact with a revolving camera like you want to shag it, grasping downward hand movements was also frowned upon as was any kind of crotch highlighting. I remember that Iceland got something like minus 100 for said Euro-criminal activity.
We didn't win of course, but it was really disappointing is that one of the wankest entries did win. I personally thought that Azerbaijans entry was entirely forgettable, insipid and the female singer pranced around in what looked like an Eastern European prostitute's dress. They were dreadful. I actually wanted either Italy or Moldova to win - Moldova's entry was really fun, catchy without being naff and they were dressed like towering pointy-hated gnomes... which was novel!
So a really good day over all. BBF usually goes out and gets drunk without me as I'm not really into it and find drinking for 4-8 hours 2 or 3 times a week mind-numbingly dull; but I loved spending the whole day with him for a change - we spend our spare time in different ways so it doesn't happen that often!
So a good weekend so far - let's hope today is just as fun!
